[Press Release: September 21, 2000] Greens welcome Car Free Day.The Wicklow Greens have welcomed European Car Free Day which takes place on Friday September 22nd. According to the Wicklow Greens this is a European-wide initiative and motorists are being asked to leave their cars at home for a day and to use the alternative of public transport. The Wicklow Greens believe that while there is a great deal of good will amongst the public in relation to the concept of a Car Free Day, many people feel that the public transport system will be unable to provide an adequate alternative mode of transport on the day. According to Green Party councillor Deirdre de Burca, while this one-day event cannot amount to anything more than a symbolic gesture, it will certainly concentrate the minds of the public on the desirability of making a shift in behaviour from car-driving to more environmentally-friendly modes of transport such as public transport. Councillor de Burca points out that there are other practical steps which individuals can take to ensure that the way they travel is as environmentally friendly as possible. One option which people in Co Wicklow have is to use the dublintraffic.ie website says councillor de Burca. The Car Pool section of this website enables people from the counties bordering on Dublin to establish contact with other commuters from their own neighbourhood or town, and to set up Car Pools to a common destination in Dublin. Councillor de Burca points out that by getting involved in car-pooling, people can cut down significantly on the cost of travelling to and from work and can also help to reduce traffic congestion.
