PUBLIC INFORMATION EVENING ON WASTE

The Heatherview Hotel, Bray Seafront, Thursday 28th September 8 pm

IS THE COST OF OUR WASTE TOO HIGH?

As a society, we produce huge amounts of waste. In Wicklow, as in many other counties, we have problems in finding suitable places in which to dump our waste. Last year, Wicklow County Council made a very controversial decision to transfer waste collection services to private operators. While the prices householders are charged by the private operators are reasonably competitive at present, there is no guarantee that they will remain so in the future.

In addition to the financial cost of disposing of waste, householders also pay in other ways. Litter destroys and defaces the environment. Waste pollutes the coastline. Illegal dumps spring up around the county and people living next to them have to put up with unacceptable noise levels, foul smells and contamination of local water supplies.

The Green Party believes that the cost of waste is too high. The Party has invited a number of experts in waste to take part in an Information Evening on the subject. The aim of this public talk is to help members of the public to learn about ways in which they as householders can reduce the cost of their waste, and how as members of a wider society they can influence how the waste problem is managed in this country.
