[Press Release: January, 2000 ] De Burca claims Coastal Protection Scheme is part of longer-term land reclamation plan for Bray seafront!Green Party councillor Deirdre de Burca has claimed that the recent highly controversial decision by Bray Urban District Council to proceed with a Coastal Protection Scheme for Bray Seafront is part of a longer-term land reclamation plan for the seafront.“I have been shown a very sophisticated and detailed architect’s plan for the seafront which has been commissioned by certain interest groups in the town” says councillor de Burca. “This plan envisages the development of high rise apartments, a luxury hotel and a conference/exhibition centre on land which has been reclaimed at the seafront”. Councillor de Burca believes that Phase Two of the Coastal Protection Scheme is just the first step towards the realisation of this plan for land reclamation in the seafront area. “It is quite astounding to think that despite a huge level of public opposition to this scheme, certain councillors on Bray UDC railroaded the decision through” says councillor de Burca. ” This was clearly undemocratic and is yet another step in the destruction of Bray’s most valued public amenity areas in order to facilitate business and development interests”. Councillor de Burca has pointed to the fact that a recent letter from Minister Frank Fahey to Bray UDC made it clear that the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources would have no objection to seeing the alternative scheme favoured by the Bray Beachwatch group being implemented. “The small majority of Bray UDC councillors who voted through this deeply undemocratic decision should be now called upon to explain their actions” says councillor de Burca. “They clearly had no mandate from the public to vote in this way”.
