GREENS CONCERNED ABOUT BRAY SEAFRONT !

The Wicklow Greens have recently expressed their concern about the impact of the controversial Coastal Protection Scheme which is currently being implemented at Bray Seafront. According to Green Party councillor Deirdre de Burca, the likely impact of this Coastal Protection Scheme on the seafront area is only now beginning to be appreciated by the public at large.

“Despite the efforts which were made by Bray Beachwatch to highlight the devastating impact which the proposed Coastal Protection Scheme would have on the seafront prior to its implementation, I believe that it is only now that the reality of what is happening is becoming apparent to the public” says councillor de Burca. “It is clear that when the scheme is implemented in full, the beach will no longer be a practical or visual amenity as far as the public is concerned”.

Councillor de Burca has stated her belief that the removal of shingle from the codling bank for the purposes of “beach nourishment” has resulted in significant disruption to the unique ecology of what was, until recently, a natural break barrier for the seafront area. Councillor de Burca is also concerned that the beach area will become a wasteland which will be largely inaccessible to the public and which will be overrun by litter and dog excrement.

“It is very unfortunate that the viable alternative schemes which were proposed by Beachwatch were not properly considered by the councillors of Bray UDC and that this publicly unpopular scheme was pushed through by a slim majority of councillors” says councillor de Burca. “Yet another of Wicklow’s unique natural amenities is in the process of being destroyed and once again members of the public are powerless to prevent it”.
