[Press Release: Summer, 2001] Greens call for protection for Glen of the Downs structure! The Wicklow Greens have recently called for the listing and protection of a structure known as the Octagon in the Glen of the Downs. This structure was recently visited by a representative from Duchas, the National Heritage Service, in response to concerns raised by the Bray Gardai regarding reports of 'Rave Parties' being held there. According to Green Party Councillor, Deirdre de Burca, enquiries carried out by the representative from Duchas established that the Rave parties which do occur in the vicinity of the Octagon happen as infrequently as once a year. "While Duchas has apparently decided that this information does not warrant sealing off the structure of the Octagon" says councillor de Burca "it does intend instead to seal off the two chambers under the Octagon". Councillor de Burca points out that the Octagon is part of the former La Touche estate at Bellevue and was erected in the mid 1750's. "Sadly the roof of this structure has long since caved in" says Deirdre de Burca "and all that are left today are the walls and the windows from which people can enjoy extensive views of the Glen of the Downs, the Sugarloaf, the Scalp and beyond". She adds that the chambers which are to be sealed off by Duchas form a unique structure which was apparently used by the La Touche family as a banqueting room. Councillor de Burca points out that there are also a number of ancillary structures in the immediate area of the Octagon which are of great historical interest. She mentions the well-preserved, vault-like structure known as the "ice-box", as well as the network of underground tunnels which it is believed were used to drive cattle through, or for servants and deliveries to the Bellevue House. "We must put proper protection in place for these important historical structures" says councillor de Burca. "I have spoken to my colleague on Wicklow County Council, George Jones, who has a great interest in the La Touche estate. He has agreed to support me in a submission to the council in the autumn to have these structures listed in the County Development Plan".
