[Press Release: January, 2000 ] Southern Cross residents must fight back, say GreensGreen Party councillor Deirdre de Burca has recently called on the residents on the Southern Cross area to oppose further developments planned for the area which she claims will worsen the traffic congestion on the Southern Cross road.Councillor de Burca has particularly criticised a planning application by Spring Grove Laundries for a commercial laundry at Giltspur off the Southern Cross road. This planning application is currently being considered by Wicklow County Council. The site for the proposed laundry is located next to the Brennanstown Riding Stables and will have access onto the Southern Cross Road. The planning application specifies that up to 290 car parking spaces will be provided. “Once again the unfortunate residents of the Southern Cross are being asked to tolerate development which will result in greater traffic congestion on this road” says councillor de Burca. “I am particularly concerned about the impact of the proposed development on the Killarney Road roundabout. At present there are significant delays at this roundabout during peak periods and any additional traffic will only add to the delay”. Councillor de Burca has pointed to the fact that the Southern Cross Road will have to bear the additional traffic which will be generated by the Mc Inerney housing development and by the new golf club which is being developed on the western slopes of Bray Head. “Enough is enough” says councillor de Burca. “Our planners cannot continue to allow new developments in already extremely built-up areas and expect existing residents to tolerate the traffic and environmental problems which will follow”.
