DE BURCA PUTS DOWN SELLAFIELD MOTION AT WICKLOW COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING

Wicklow Green Party councillor Deirdre de Burca is calling for all-party support for a motion on Sellafield that she put down at last Monday's meeting of Wicklow County Council. Councillor de Burca, who is campaigning on Sellafield with her Green Party colleague MEP Nuala Ahern, said that it was important for the people of Wicklow to express their concerns about Sellafield to the authorities responsible for its continued operation. "It is important that they know how we feel", she said.

Councillor de Burca's motion proposes that each time there is an incident at Sellafield council officials are required to contact the relevant authorities in the UK to register the objection of the people of county Wicklow to the continued operation of the plant. Small leaks of radiation are a regular occurrence at Sellafield, where authorities have also been faulted for falsifying safety data.

A motion similar to the one proposed by councillor de Burca was recently adopted with all-party support by South Dublin County Council. "Every local authority in Ireland should register their objections with British Nuclear Fuels Ltd.", said councillor de Burca. "The issue of radioactive pollution from Sellafield and of the potential for a large scale catrastrophe affects everybody", she said. "The more objections that British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. recieve, the more aware they will be of the seriousness of this issue to people in Ireland".

Councillor de Burca's motion will be discussed at next month's meeting of Wicklow County Council.
