[Press Release: April 23rd, 2002] WICKLOW GREENS CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO RAIL CONSULTATION PROCESSGreen Party Councillor Deirdre de Burca is calling for individuals, groups and public authorities in county Wicklow to demand an improved rail service to the county by making submissions as part of the public consultation process on the Strategic Rail Study currently underway. The review is an examination of the future development of the railway in Ireland with a view to increasing investment in the railway infrastructure. However, according to councillor de Burca county Wicklow could be left out unless people make their voices heard. She noted that the Rosslare route had not been mentioned in press statements from the Department of Public Enterprise, which focused on lines to the West. The Rosslare route has suffered from a lack of investment over many years. "Since this study could affect investment in railway infrastructure for the next 20 years it is important that the views of the people of Wicklow are fully represented", said councillor de Burca. "Rail transportation is set to become more and more important in the years ahead so it is vital that Wicklow be well served". Specific proposals called for by de Burca and the Wicklow Green Party include:
-The complete upgrade of the track over the entire Rosslare route "A proper train service along the Rosslare route would greatly improve the quality of life of those who choose not to drive", said councillor de Burca. "It would mean fewer cars going into Dublin each day and would be a real incentive for people to use public transportation". "Rail transportation also contributes far less to climate change and to pollution than road transportation", she added. "Investment in rail transportation is an investment in sustainable transportation for ourselves and for many generations to come." A copy of the terms of reference of the Strategic Rail Review is available on the Wicklow Green's website at www.wicklowgreens.org. The deadline for submissions is April 30th. Submissions should be sent to:
