GREEN PARTY LEADER TREVOR SARGENT TO VISIT ARKLOW

Following his visit to the Whitestown illegal dump site near Baltinglass, Green Party leader Trevor Sargent T.D. will visit Arklow, Co. Wicklow to canvass with Wicklow Green Party councillor and General Election candidate Deirdre de Burca.

While in Arklow deputy Sargent and councillor de Burca will meet with the Arklow Flood Action Committee. The Arklow Flood Action Committee have recently criticised the delay in releasing a report on flooding in Arklow commissioned by Wicklow County Council and the government. While the report was scheduled to be released in April it now seems that it will not be released until after the General Election. The Arklow Flood Action Committee is calling for immediate installation of an early warning system, for the dredging of the Avoca river and for flap valves to be fitted to pipes discharging into the Avoca river in order to prevent backflow.

Deputy Sargent and councillor de Burca will also visit the Arklow Community Arts centre on Arklow's Main Street to view the ESB environmental photography exhibition and to discuss the chronic underfunding of the centre. Despite providing a wide variety of classes, exhibitions and special events attended by thousands of people and contributing greatly to the quality of community life in Arklow, the Community Arts Centre has received almost no funding from the government and survives only on members fees, commissions and donations.

Before leaving Arklow deputy Sargent will canvass on Arklow Main Street with councillor de Burca, dropping into WicklowToday.com, meeting independent Arklow UDC councillor Vincent McElheron and visiting local small businesses.
