[Press Release: April 24th, 2003] GREENS CALL FOR STRONG GARDA RESPONSE TO CRIME WAVE IN EAST BRAYGreen Party councillor, Deirdre de Burca , has called for a strong response on the part of Bray Gardai to the wave of crime that has impacted on East Bray over the past number of weeks. Councillor de Burca reports that some of her constituents have had their homes burgled in the middle of the day and serious damage done to their cars by inebriated young people leaving seafront pubs late at night."These residents are living in a permanent state of fear and anxiety" says councillor de Burca. "I am aware of one woman who left her home for ten minutes in the afternoon only to return and find it had been burgled. Many of her neighbours have had acid poured on their cars, mirrors broken and other acts of extreme vandalism carried out on their property. These anti-social activities have reached crisis proportions in recent weeks and it is imperative that the Bray Gardai respond in an appropriate way to ensure that a stop is put to these criminal acts" she says. Councillor de Burca points out that with up to seventy Gardai available to the Bray Station there is no reason why a very visible and regular Garda presence should not be on the street and in these areas, particularly late at night when pubs are closing. She has also called on Bray Town Council to review the issue of pub opening hours and to consider introducing Bye-Laws that would regulate pub opening hours in the town. "Clearly much of the late-night anti-social behaviour is fuelled by too much drink" says councillor de Burca. "We have to tackle the source of the problem and that involves the supply of alcohol to young people " she says.
