De Burca calls for more female representation on Wicklow County Council

At yesterday's meeting of Wicklow County Council, Green Party councillor, Deirdre de Burca, spoke of the importance of having more female councillors on Wicklow County Council. In welcoming Councillor Anne Ferris on to the council as a replacement for Deputy Liz Mc Manus who gave up her local authority seat, councillor de Burca pointed out that there are only five female councillors out of twenty-four on the council at present.

"In effect, this means that women make up 20% of the councillors on Wicklow County Council" she says."When you consider that women make up 50% of the population of Wicklow, it is clear that there is a shortfall of 30% that we must try to address on the counil".

Councillor de Burca has expressed her hope that many female candidates will come forward to run for the local elections next summer. "Women tend to place a high priority on issues like childcare, healthcare , care of the elderly and providing recereational amenities for children and young teenagers" she says. "We need more women on the council to make sure that these issues get the attention they deserve. The Green Party will certainly be doing its best to put a good balance of female candidates forward for the local elections and to ensure that women's voices are heard on the council".
