[Press Release: August 15th, 2003] De Burca calls for trees to be protected as Bray Town Council carries out road works on Killarney RoadGreen Party councillor, Deirdre de Burca, has called on Bray Town Council to avoid unnecessary damage to mature trees near the Kilbride Estate, Killarney Rd as road works are being carried out in the area. The council is currently implementing part of the "Safe Routes to School" plan along the Killarney Road and this work involves widening the footpaths and creating a new cycle lane."The Green Party is very happy to see the Safe Routes to School Plan being implemented in the town after many years delay" said the Green Party councillor. "However, this most not be done at the expense of mature trees in the area. With a little careful planning, the destruction of two poplar trees and a number of oak trees in the area can be avoided". The Green Party councillor reports that she was contacted by a number of concerned Bray residents who had been informed by contractors at the site that the trees in question would "almost certainly be damaged". De Burca claims she cannot understand why the cycle lanes cannot be re-routed slightly in order to avoid damaging the roots of the trees. She has contacted senior officials at Bray Town Council who have agreed to meet the Green Party on iste and to explore alternatives to damaging or destroying the trees. "I must congratulate the officials at Bray Town Council on their willingness to talk to me and to listen to my concerns" she said. "It is my hope that they will display the same openness to identifying solutions to the potential destruction of local trees when we visit the site on the Killarney Road. I dont see any reason why the introduction of new cycle lanes in the town must be at the expense of any of its natural heritage".
