NEW PLAY POLICY FOR WICKLOW MUST BE GIVEN SOME TEETH SAY GREENS

Green Party councillor Deirdre de Burca has welcomed Wicklow County Council's production of a new Play Policy for the county but has insisted that this policy must be "given teeth".

"While I welcome this Play Policy and feel it will be of critical importance to the county, I am not reassured that it is going to result in the provision of badly needed play facilities for children in Wicklow" she says. "I have seen so many glossy policy documents being produced by the council at this stage. many of them do not translate into any meaninful changes on the ground and that is why I felt it was very important to point this out to the county Manager at last Monday's meeting".

Councillor de Burca says that she wishes to see an Operational Plan being produced by the council which would translate some of the very worthwhile aspirations in the play policy document into realities. "I would like to see certain towns and villages in the county being prioritised for investment in facilities such as skateboard parks and playgrounds and a definitie timeframe in which this will be achieved" she says. "Bray , Greystones, Arklow and Wicklow town should be prioritised for investment in these facilities as they have the largest population numbers and many young families with children. If we dont have specific commitments and a timeframe on the implementation of this policy,I believe the plan will join all of the other glossy policy documents that tend to gather dust on the shelves of Wicklow County Council".
