[Press Release: April18th, 2004] GREEN PARTY LEADS CLEAN-UP OF BRAY HEAD
The Green Party recently led a 'Spring Clean Up' of Bray Head as part of the annual 'an Taisce Spring Clean Up' initiative. Party members were joined in the Bray Head Car Park by local residents who spent the afternoon gathering litter and other waste from the North side of Bray Head. Participants were issued with an Taisce refuse sacks, vests and gloves, and children were encouraged to help their parents in the clean up. "We were delighted with the turn out on the day" says Green Party councillor, Deirdre de Burca. "We had leafleted many homes in the area to let them know the Clean Up was taking place, but people passing by also joined in the afternoon's activities. It was a fun, family- friendly day and it was quite stunning to see how much waste we collected in an afternoon - up to 25 full refuse sacks". Local Green Party Area Spokesperson, Ciaran O'Brien, stated that more community initiatives such as the Spring Clean Up would be in the interest of the town as a whole. "People are beginning to realise that they cant just sit back and allow an important natural amenity like Bray Head be destroyed by excess litter" he says. "We were pleasantly surprised at the strong public interest in this event and we intend organising a clean up of Naylor's Cove in the very near future. Many people in the town are concerned about the growing litter problem and we want to provide leadership to demonstrate to people that they can make a difference with regard to litter problems in their own areas". Caroline Burrell, another Green Party spokesperson, expressed her dismay at the huge numbers of beer cans, beer bottles, plastic bags and general rubbish that has clearly been dumped on Bray Head over the past few years. "This raises several important issues for the town" she says. "Firstly we have to ask ourselves why so many young people are engaging in drinking parties up on the Head and what alternatives are provided for them in the town. Secondly we need to ask of Bray Town Council why no Management Plan is in place for an important amenity like Bray Head. The lack of such a plan is just not acceptable" she says.
