[Press Release: April 25th, 2005] De Burca calls for Water supply in Arklow to be tackled before further development proceedsGreen Party councillor, Deirdre de Burca, has called for the water supply situation in Arklow to be addressed before any new planning permissions for development are granted by Arklow Town Council or Wicklow County Council.According to de Burca, she is regularly contacted by Arklow residents who complain of low water pressure, or no water at all, over extended periods of time."For example, last week I was contacted by residents of Ballymoney Road on the outskirts of Arklow who were complaining that they had been without any water for nearly a week" says de Burca. "I had to contact both Arklow Town Council and Wicklow County Council before a water tanker was made available to the residents to help them to get through the weekend". The Green councillor claims that different parts of Arklow regularly experience water shortages or low water pressure. She believes it is not acceptable for local councils to be granting planning permission for new developments in the town when the existing water supply is so precarious. "I am aware that Wicklow County Council is presently looking at a number of wells at Ballyduff that will provide a greater water supply to the town" says de Burca. However, these will take some time before they come on stream properly. In the meantime I am calling on Arklow Town Council and Wicklow County Council to refuse any new large applications for planning permission in the town until the new water supply is secured. Otherwise we will see existing residents continuing to suffer water shortages as new developments make claims on the already overstretched water supply in the town".
