[Press Release: January 4th, 2005] Greens call on Greenstar to collect their recyclables!
Green Party Councillor, Caroline Burrell, is calling on Greenstar & Wicklow County Council to empty its recyclable Bottle Banks more frequently. For more than a week, the Bottle Banks operated by Greenstar for Wicklow County Council at the Ballywaltrim site on the Southern Cross Road have been overflowing with bottles & cans. Cllr. Burrell has had calls from concerned residents and has called to the site three times in the past few days to check out the site. She has been unable to leave her own bottles & cans there due to the fact that the Bottle Banks are completely full. There is now also a large pile building up of broken glass, bottles & cans in boxes, which have been left beside the overflowing banks. "The Southern Cross area has been hugely neglected over the past ten years and as a resident of the Southern Cross I have been frustrated at the absolute lack of facilities provided," she says. "With over 800 houses in the area and residents continually asking for recycling facilities we finally have had five Bottle Banks installed during the past year at the Ballywaltrim site, which are operated by Greenstar. Now we have a situation for the second time, where people can't use the facilities because the Banks are not being emptied frequently enough. With the long holiday period, Greenstar & Wicklow County Council should have anticipated an increase in recycling and made sure the Bottle Banks were emptied between Christmas and New Year!" The Green Party Councillor stated that she will be calling on Greenstar & Wicklow County Council to get the Bottle Banks emptied as quickly as possible and to ensure this does not happen again. Cllr. Burrell will also request for more Bottle Banks to be provided for the Ballywaltrim site. Cllr. Burrell stated that, "I hope that Greenstar & Wicklow County Council will listen to feedback from its customers and that they continue to improve the service, both in terms of the materials they collect for recycling and how frequently they are collected which will encourage people to recycle more."
