[Press Release: March 6th, 2005] Planning breaches by developers at Southern Cross are a disgrace claim GreensThe Green Party has claimed that developers of the Markethaven site at the Southern Cross are in breach of numerous planning conditions and have been issued a Letter of Warning by Wicklow County Council.Green Party councillor, Deirdre de Burca has stated that the actions of those companies involved in developing the site are a "disgrace". She points out that her colleague, Councillor Caroline Burrell had to report the developers to Wicklow County Council several months ago as they had begun work on the site prematurely. De Burca claims that she has been contacted by a number of local residents who complain that the developers have consistently been operating outside of the hours agreed to as part of their planning conditions. "These residents have complained of unacceptable levels of noise from early morning until late in the evening, and persisting right through the weekend, although this is not allowed by their planning conditions" she says. "They were so desperate recently that they rang the Gardai who came to inspect the site. This is just not acceptable". Green Party councillor, Caroline Burrell states that two new planning applications have been submitted for additional development on the site. "I do not believe that Wicklow County Council should even consider these new planning applications until they are sure that the existing works on the site are in compliance with planning laws" she says. She also points out that numerous mature trees on the site have been felled or had their roots so badly damaged that they will not survive. The Green Party councillors have lodged a formal complaint to Bray Town Council and Wicklow County Council about the planning breaches on the Markethaven site. "We will continue to monitor this situation" says de Burca. "We cannot have a situation where developers are allowed to act as though they are outside of the law that the rest of us have to comply with".
