[Press Release: September 6th, 2005] De Burca welcomes new Recycling Centre for BrayAt yesterday’s meeting of Wicklow County Council, it was announced that following the allocation of an extra 1 million euros from the Dept of the Environment for a recycling centre for Bray, Wicklow County Council had finally secured a suitable site for the centre at Beechwood Close, off the Boghall Rd.The Cathaoirleach of Bray Town Council, Green Party councillor Deirdre de Burca, expressed her delight at the news. She pointed out that the search for a suitable site in Bray had been going on for over two years now and that the people of Bray had begun to despair. She welcomes the extra funding allocated by the Dept of the Environment for the centre and pointed out that she had frequently argued this point in the local media. "Wicklow County Council Council officials kept telling me that the previous funding they had received for the recycling centre was not sufficient to cover the cost of a site, given the high land costs in North Wicklow" she says. "I raised this issue several times in the local media although it was not a very popular thing to say, and thankfully the Minister for the Environment decided to grant the extra funding needed". Councillor de Burca pointed out that the newly identified site off the Boghall Road was being leased by the council for a three year period. "This is a short-term solution to the issue of providing a comprehensive recycling centre for Bray" she says. "We must immediately begin the search for a site for a long-term permanent recycling centre for the town. I believe this search needs to start immediately and I intend that considerable progress will be made on the issue during my year as Chairperson of Bray Town Council". While a number of Bray councillors have expressed concerns at the traffic implications of the recycling centre off the Boghall Rd, Green Party councillor Caroline Burrell says that it is important to be positive about the fact that a short-term recycling centre has been identified for the town. "Of course there traffic issues that will need to be managed but this is an area that is zoned for industrial development and already has a Power City outlet located there" she says. "I believe overall this is a very positive development for the town". Green Party councillor, Ciaran O'Brien said that at last Bray was getting some long-overdue waste infrastructure that would be expected in a town of its size. "Finding a more permanent site will be the real challenge" he says. "We want to find a site that will be large enough to comfortably deal with all of the wastes which our constituents want to recycle and which can also deal with the large volumes of traffic that will be generated. The Green Party has a few key sites in mind and we will be discussing these with the officials of Bray Town Council and Wicklow County Council". Cllr de Burca welcomed the decision of Michael Nicholson, Director of Environmental Services of Wicklow County Council to accepted her invitation to speak at a meeting of Bray Town Council on Tuesday 7th September about the proposed new recycling centre for Bray.
