[Press Release: August 31st, 2005] Greens claim it is time for Councils to remember the Southern CrossThe Southern Cross area has been forgotten about and left in limbo says Green Party Councillor Burrell. Residents who live on the Southern Cross Road are very concerned and totally fed-up with the lack of attention this area has received regarding the provision of community facilities and amenities.Despite the fact that there are now over 800 homes immediately adjoining the Southern Cross, there are no facilities for residents apart from one small playground. It is time that both Bray Town and Wicklow Co. Councils took the needs of the area more seriously in regards to proper traffic management, road-markings, footpaths & pedestrian crossings, grass-cutting & landscaping, cycle lanes & shops. According to the Green Party Councillor, this was one of her first priorities as a newly elected Councillor on Bray Town Council. "I have consistently raised this issue with both Bray Town Council and Wicklow Co. Council since the local election last year" says Burrell. "I understand that even though some of the estates come under Bray Town Council, the whole of the Southern Cross Road comes under the jurisdiction of Wicklow Co. Council and it is thus their full responsibility to maintain this road. The response to my enquiries to date has been lamentable," says Cllr. Caroline Burrell. "I frequently receive calls from frustrated residents about the state of the road and the lack of amenities in the area. The road is a disgrace from beginning to end with road-markings obliterated because of road-works, grass verges uncut or left uneven due to previous road-works, no landscaping, weeds growing on the banks and trees & shrubs either dying or falling down due to no maintenance of any sort. For the past year a new retail warehousing site has been under construction, which now includes a new roundabout, but where are the footpaths? These should have been put in first or in the interim some temporary provision so pedestrians could at least cross the road. At the IDA Business Park, pedestrians also have great difficulty trying to cross the road due to the sheer volume of traffic, as there is no pedestrian crossing for them. Cyclists take their lives in their hands on this stretch of road, as there are no cycle lanes and broken hard shoulders. This situation is reminiscent of 1960's estates with no essential facilities or amenities. Despite living here for the last ten years, we still have no local shop! Have our Town Planners learnt nothing from the last 40 years? I am calling on Wicklow Co. Council to maintain the road and provide proper landscaping and on Bray Town Council to speed up the snail-like planning process that has delayed the provision of a supermarket!" concluded Cllr. Burrell.
