Good News for Forestry Development Projects says Green Party Councillor

Green Party Cllr. Caroline Burrell welcomed the announcement of details of the successful projects under the Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Development call for proposals. Total funding of approximately €800,000 has been allocated for 20 projects. One of these successful Projects approved for funding includes support for the establishment of a number of woodland owner groups in County Wicklow.

Cllr. Burrell stated, "This is good news for Wicklow as it was one of the successful Counties in being selected for funding. Wickland Uplands Council submitted a proposal for "Establishing a Co Wicklow Forestry Forum incorporating a Private Forest Owner's Association" and will receive €40,000 for this worthwhile project. Congratulations to the Wicklow Uplands on this iniative. I know that the Uplands Council carries out tremendous work promoting and representing the views and interests of over 40 member groups and individuals, while also taking a partnership approach to sustainable development. The proposal clearly demonstrates the imagination and enthusiasm which exists within the forest sector of which we have a large proportion of in Wicklow, and the extent to which our forests feed into so many aspects of modern Ireland”.

The projects had been submitted under a call for proposals issued earlier this year. This is the third year in which proposals had been invited under this procedure, the overall objective of which is to contribute to the sustainable development of forestry by way of support for relevant pilot projects, studies and initiatives from all parts of the forestry sector. Particular attention is given to relatively small scale, short-term projects which do not fit readily into other Department schemes.
