[Press Release: January 20th, 2008] Burrell encourages women to participate in cervical cancer screening programmeGreen Party Cllr. Caroline Burrell has called on women to take note of European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, which runs until the 26th January and promotes better awareness of all aspects of cervical cancer.Cllr. Burrell said: "Cervical cancer is a major global health problem. In Europe approximately 50,000 women develop cervical cancer each year. In Ireland trends show that the number of women dying from this type of cancer has increased by 1.5 per cent every year since 1978. However, well organised and well resourced screening programmes have been proven to dramatically reduce the mortality rate of cervical cancer by early detection and prevention. "I want to encourage women to ensure that they take good care of their physical health and this week highlights the need to be vigilant in the area of cervical cancer. The disease can be prevented by attending regular smear tests and I will continue to ensure that adequate screening programmes are available locally for women in the town"
