Cllr. Burrell welcomes €60,000 to preserve Wicklow's Church Heritage

Green Party Cllr. Caroline Burrell has welcomed over €60,000 in funding announced by Environment Minister John Gormley yesterday to protect and preserve heritage projects in Wicklow.

Cllr. Burrell said, “As a member of the Wicklow Heritage Forum, we have been encouraging local groups to apply for funding for heritage projects like these. This annual based funding which follows on from last years grant of €40,000 that has now been raised to €60,000 this year, will enable the projects involved - the Church of Ireland Church at Nun's Cross, Ashford and the Donaghmore Church, Donard - to plan long term and is a welcome boost to the committees involved in the restoration work."

“I welcome the protection of the churches and halls involved. As well as being a vital part of the community, many of the projects play a part in the local tourism industry and when finished may attract even more visitors. Current projects may also act as demonstration models and encourage interest in other heritage developments in the town.”

The funding was announced today under the Civic Structures Conservation Grants Scheme, 2008 and includes 138 projects nationwide. All applications were rated by an independent panel of conservation experts, who noted the high quality of applications received.

The Church of Ireland Church at Nun's Cross, Ashford receives €40,000 and Donaghmore Church in Donard receives €20,000.
