[Press Release: February 27th, 2008] Greens call on public to participate in National Spring Clean CampaignGreen Party public representatives have welcomed an Taisce’s National Spring Clean Campaign. According to Green Party Senator Deirdre de Burca, the Spring Clean Campaign is now in its ninth year. “The campaign encourages every sector of society to actively participate and take responsibility for litter, by actually conducting clean-ups in their own local environment” she says. “The National Spring Clean is traditionally run throughout the ‘Spring’ month of April to kick start the national consciousness after the winter months”.“With eight years behind National Spring Clean, the partnership between An Taisce, Government and commercial sponsors has proved to be a recipe for great achievement” said Green Party Cllr. Ciaran O'Brien. “Over 341,005 volunteers participated in some 3,594 events nationwide, an estimated 3,340 tonnes of litter was collected and 35% of the total amount of waste collected was recycled” he said. Cllr O'Brien says that any group that registers an event can receive a FREE clean-up kit, which includes protective tabards to wear during the clean-up , information on waste reduction, reuse and recycling and colour coded refuse and recycling bags. Green Party Cllr., Steve Matthews, is calling on the people in Bray, its schools and residents associations to take part in the Spring Clean Up. “The key objectives are to encourage clean-ups throughout the whole month of April, galvanise the practices of recycling and re-use where possible, increase the number of events and participants, promote personal responsibility for litter and heighten awareness of litter and waste issues” he said. “There is little doubt that National Spring Clean 2006 achieved the above mentioned objectives. As well as a 4% increase in the number of events and a 16% increase in the number of volunteers, the campaign enjoyed widespread media coverage and support in every county in Ireland, including in Bray.” “It is the effort and enthusiasm displayed by the volunteers and indeed by Local Authorities that has ensured the campaign’s real triumph” said Green Party Cllr. Caroline Burrell. “As National Spring Clean has become a fixed date on the school and community groups’ calendar, this partnership can hopefully look forward to an even greater success for many years to come” she said.
