Bray Leads the Way for New Polystyrene Scheme

Green Party Cllr. Caroline Burrell is delighted to see the Recycling Centre in Bray leading the way in regard to a new Pilot Scheme for recycling Polystyrene.

At present in Ireland only Materials numbered from 1 to 5 are recycled though there are Materials numbered 6 & 7 which are not yet recycled at present and end up in landfill. In Wicklow, we have four Recycling Centres with one in Bray which has begun this new Pilot Scheme of taking bulk Polystyrene packaging in for recycling.

"Recycling rates for packaging have soared over the past decade. Recovery and recycling rates have reached very high levels by European standards - by 2005 recovery of packaging waste was close to 60% compared with just 15% a decade ago", Cllr. Burrell noted. "We are exceeding EU targets in this area but we need to do more.

"At present 83% of the waste in Ireland collected for recycling or recovery is necessarily exported. This includes almost all cardboard, paper and plastic collected at our recycling facilities around the country. We can build on the progress made through achieving higher recycling rates, but we also need to tackle the high levels of packaging waste being generated and deal effectively with litter from packaging such as recycling Polystyrene and Bray Recycling Centre has started to tackle this", said Cllr. Burrell.

Bray Recycling Centre accepts the following Materials - Cardboard, Paper, News papers & Magazines, Cards & Diaries, Plastics, Glass, Aluminium & Food Cans, Tetra Paks, Mobile phones, Batteries, CD's, Bulbs, Clothes & Textiles, Books, Stamps, Cooking Oil & Electrical Goods and is open Mon - Fri from 9.30 a.m. to 3.45 p.m, (Thurs 5.45 p.m.) and Sat 9.00 a.m. to 1.45 p.m. They now also have a Charity Shop located in the Centre as well as being an Education Centre. Composters are also available to purchase.

With everyone's continued support - including the great recycling effort being made by householders in Bray and in the County - we can all help to achieve results in packaging waste that will put Ireland to the forefront of best practice internationally", stated Cllr. Burrell.
