[Press Release: February 19th, 2008] Green Cllrs. welcome funding for Bray from the 2008 Roads ProgrammeGreen Party Cllrs. welcomed the details of the Government’s €618 million investment programme in the regional and local roads network for 2008 which is the biggest ever grant by Government for regional and local roads.Cllr. Caroline Burrell said, “This year road safety is being put forward as the top priority re non-national road allocations. The Government’s new Road Safety Strategy identified the importance of investment in the regional and local roads network. While safety is central to all road improvement and maintenance work - Bray has been specifically allocated €624,000 in this year’s allocations to tackle accident blackspots, regional road signposting as well as at improving and maintaining the network and catering for investment in strategic routes which will benefit all road users.” Cllr. Ciaran O'Brien added: “We welcome that 50% of the total available funds include funding for the Pavement Restoration Programme, which is intended to improve 2,500 kilometres of road this year and will surface dress a further 4,200 kilometres. In addition €188 million will be spent on over 300 specific road improvements schemes right around the country.” Cllr. Steve Matthews stressed the importance of local authorities in the improvement and maintenance of the regional and local roads network. “State grants are a supplement to expenditure by the local authorities. All authorities need to maintain and even increase their own expenditure on their road networks and funds have been set aside in Bray Town Councils 2008 budget for these.”
