[Press Release: February 8th, 2008]

First phase of 2008 large-scale building projects programme for schools on the way at last says Cllr. Burrell

Details were recently announced of the large scale building projects that Dept. of Education has approved to commence construction. These projects will deliver
  • 13 new schools and two extensions at primary level,
  • Two new schools and one extension at post-primary level,
  • A further 30 new primary schools in rapidly developing areas, being planned to be in place by next September.
Green Party Cllr. Caroline Burrell stated: "These schools which include St. Andrews National School and Newcourt Special School in Bray are among the first phase of the projects that will commence construction during 2008 and 2009. This is very good news as these schools have been waiting a number of years to get the go ahead. Plans are well advanced for these schools and Planning Permission applications have already been lodged. The immediate task is for the Dept. of Education to ensure that the projects in this first phase are advanced to construction immediately.

"Almost €600million is to be spent this year on school building projects with them being rolled out during the year. It is good to see the Government's commitment to delivering improvements in the quality of existing primary and post-primary school accommodation throughout the county. The progression of these special schools will also help to deliver quality facilities for children with special educational needs", concluded Cllr. Burrell.
