Green Party welcomes Approval of funding for new Wastewater Treatment Plant to serve Shanganagh and Bray

Green Party Cllr. Ciaran O’Brien welcomed the announcement that Minister John Gormley TD, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, has approved the necessary funding to enable Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council accept a tender for a new wastewater treatment plant at Shanganagh, Co. Dublin. The €72.67m contract is to be awarded to the Sisk – Dragados – Drace Consortioum. The Minister is funding the scheme under his Department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2007 - 2009.

Green Party Cllr. Steve Matthews said, “The new wastewater plant will provide secondary treatment for Bray and Shanganagh. It will replace the preliminary treatment plants currently serving Shanganagh and Bray. The contract will also include mechanical and electrical works at a stormwater tank and pumping station in Bray”.

"I expect very significant improvements in environmental and water quality standards to accrue from this scheme," Green Party Cllr Caroline Burrell said. "It reflects the Government’s commitment to continuing investment in the country’s wastewater schemes to ensure that discharges into our rivers, lakes and coastal water meet the highest international standards." Subsequent contracts under the Bray – Shanganagh Sewerage Scheme will provide for the construction of a transfer pipeline between Bray and Shanganagh and address any other inadequacies in the drainage infrastructure in these areas. Minister John Gormley confirmed that his approval "clears the way for Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council to complete the contract formalities with the successful tenderer and to proceed to construction as soon as possible."
